Schluter Fence Installation: The Miami Owner’s Guide
Schluter fence installation in Miami typically runs $4,130 to $10,620 installed, and we stock the common profiles and corners on our service trucks so most jobs finish the same day we start. You usually find out your Schluter edge trim or fence profile failed the same way: water staining at the tile-to-floor transition, a loose metal strip catching your toe, or grout cracking along the edge of a shower curb. In Miami, the humidity and salt air speed up what would be a slow cosmetic issue anywhere else into a real problem, because water gets behind the trim and starts working on your substrate.
We’re an independent Miami contractor, not affiliated with Schluter Systems. What we do is stock, match, and install Schluter-compatible fence profiles and edge trim correctly, with the waterproofing done right underneath so the repair doesn’t fail again in a year.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter makes several trim and fence profile lines that Miami homeowners end up replacing: the Schiene (straight edge trim), Rondec (rounded edge), Quadec (square edge), and Dilex (movement joints and corner profiles). The gotcha most people hit is that these profiles come in specific heights matched to tile thickness, typically 5/16″, 3/8″, 1/2″, and 5/8″ in finishes ranging from brushed aluminum to matte black. If someone installed a 3/8″ profile on 1/2″ tile, the trim sits proud or the tile overhangs, and water finds the gap.
To identify what you have, look at the end of the metal strip where it terminates. Schluter stamps the profile name and the height code there, though it can be faint after years of cleaning products and foot traffic. If the stamp’s gone, we measure the exposed leg height and match it. For OEM versus aftermarket on Schluter specifically: the OEM profile carries Schluter’s anodized finish, which holds up better to Miami’s salt air than most powder-coated aftermarket versions. We’ll use OEM when you want the exact factory match, and honest aftermarket profiles when the OEM line is discontinued or the finish matters less than budget, but we’ll tell you the tradeoff before you spend a dollar.

Signs Your Schluter Fence Installation Is Failing
- Water staining along the base of the trim: This is the classic first signal. The profile’s integrated anchoring leg has pulled away from the thin-set, and moisture is wicking behind it. In Miami, this usually appears first on exterior-facing walls and around shower curbs where standing water sits after every use.
- The trim lifts or flexes when you step on it: The anchoring leg was never fully embedded, or the substrate behind it has softened. On floor transitions between tile and carpet or LVP, a flexing Schiene profile means the subfloor at that seam needs attention, not just the metal.
- Grout cracking in a straight line along the trim edge: That’s movement. The profile and the tile are expanding at different rates, common in Miami where interior humidity swings between air-conditioned dry and summer-wet. The Dilex movement joint profiles exist precisely to absorb this, and when someone used a fixed profile instead, the grout pays for it.
- Discoloration or pitting on the metal face: Salt air is rough on aluminum finishes. If you’re within a mile of the coast, you’ll see microscopic pitting within five to seven years even on well-maintained trim. It’s cosmetic at first, but pitting creates micro-crevices where water and cleaning chemicals sit, accelerating the failure.
- The end cap is missing or the profile has pulled away from the wall: This happens when the original installer cut the profile short or used the wrong adhesive at the termination. Water gets in at the open end and travels along the full length of the fence profile, loosening it from behind.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical single transition or shower curb replacement in Miami, installed pricing lands between $4,130 and $10,620 depending on profile length, finish, and how much substrate repair has to happen first. The range is wide because a straightforward profile swap on a sound substrate sits at the low end, while a job that involves removing water-damaged backer board, re-waterproofing with Schluter Kerdi band, and re-installing tile pushes toward the top.
Your written quote separates the profile cost from the labor and any substrate work, so you see exactly where the money goes before we start. Every Schluter fence installation we do carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right, in writing, on every job. That includes the waterproofing underneath, not just the visible metal on top.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely diagnose a failing Schluter fence profile yourself: run your finger along the exposed edge for lift, check for staining, and note where grout has cracked. What you don’t want to do is pull the profile yourself if the substrate behind it is wet or soft. Schluter profiles are embedded in thin-set during tile installation. Ripping one out without knowing what’s behind it can turn a $300 trim swap into a full waterproofing rebuild, and if you hit a water-damaged subfloor and tile over it anyway, you’re locking in a mold problem behind your floor.
If the substrate is sound and you’re comfortable with a grinder, a clean profile swap is doable. If any of the symptoms above are present, or the job touches a shower or exterior wall, call (850) 801-8046 and we’ll come assess it. The estimate is free, and we’ll tell you if it’s a simple swap or a real repair.
FAQs

A properly installed Schluter profile on an interior floor transition should last 15 to 20 years in Miami before the finish degrades to the point of needing replacement. Coastal exposure cuts that to 7 to 12 years on the finish, though the profile itself remains structurally sound. What fails first in Miami is almost never the metal; it’s the thin-set bond behind it when water was allowed in.
Minor lifting on a straight run can sometimes be re-adhered if the substrate is dry and the profile hasn’t deformed. If the anchoring leg is corroded, bent, or grinding against the tile from movement, replacement is the only honest fix. Call (850) 801-8046 and we’ll tell you which situation you have, with photos of what we found.
A straightforward profile swap on a single transition takes half a day including prep and cleanup. If substrate repair and re-waterproofing are required, plan for two days: day one for removal, waterproofing, and thin-set cure, day two for profile installation and grout. We’ll put the schedule in writing before work starts.
We keep the common Schiene, Rondec, and Quadec profiles in 3/8″ and 1/2″ heights on our trucks in the Miami area, along with inside and outside corners. Special-order finishes and less common heights take three to five business days. We also stock parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone installations when the profile replacement is part of a larger repair.
