Sakrete Bathroom Remodeling: The Miami Owner’s Guide
A full bathroom remodel in Miami using Sakrete products for the shower pan, mortar bed, and waterproofing base typically runs $10,620 to $33,040 installed, depending on bathroom size and how much of the old substrate has to come out. We stock Sakrete-compatible materials on our trucks and can usually start within a week of your written estimate. Most Miami homeowners call us after they notice grout cracking along the floor line, a musty smell that won’t go away, or tiles that sound hollow when tapped – all signs the original mortar bed or slope is failing underneath.
Which Sakrete Models This Applies To
Sakrete makes a family of products for bathroom work, and the compatibility question matters more than most homeowners expect. The three you’ll see most in Miami bathrooms are Sakrete Sand Mix (the standard dry-pack mortar for shower pans), Sakrete Floor Mud (a pre-blended deck mud for preslope and final slope beds), and Sakrete Fast Setting Cement-Based Waterproofing for the substrate coat under tile. Each has a different cure window and compressive strength, and Miami’s humidity changes how fast each one sets. Before you buy anything, look at the bag’s product code: Sand Mix is typically SKU 65200390, Floor Mud is 65200366, and the waterproofing runs 65200342. If you’re not sure, take a photo of the bag and text it to us – Luca reads those himself. We are an independent Miami contractor, not affiliated with Sakrete, but we install their products more than any other mortar line because they hold up in South Florida’s moisture levels.

Signs Your Sakrete Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout cracking at the wall-to-floor joint within the first year. This almost always means the mortar bed wasn’t given enough cure time before tile went down, or the preslope wasn’t pitched correctly. The fix is pulling the floor and redoing the bed.
- A musty smell that returns days after cleaning. Water is sitting under the tile, either because the waterproofing layer was skipped or the weep holes in the drain got clogged with mortar during the pour.
- Tiles that sound hollow when tapped with a screwdriver handle. That’s a bond failure. In Miami, the heat and humidity accelerate this when thin-set was mixed too dry or the mortar skinned over before the tile was set.
- Standing water in the corner of the shower two hours after use. The slope is wrong. A proper Sakrete bed should drain completely within 30 to 45 minutes. Puddles mean the bed wasn’t screeded to a quarter-inch per foot.
- Efflorescence, that white crusty residue, climbing the lower wall tiles. Moisture is wicking up through the mortar, and you’re seeing the salts leach out. It won’t kill anything, but it tells you the waterproofing barrier below has failed.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard Miami bathroom of 40 to 60 square feet, a full Sakrete shower pan rebuild with new mortar bed, waterproofing, and tile runs $5,310 to $14,160. If the failure spread to the bathroom floor and you need the whole room redone, that’s the $10,620 to $33,040 range. The spread comes down to tile choice, whether the subfloor needs repair, and how much demo is involved. Every quote we write is a line-item price: materials, labor, disposal, and permit fees broken out separately. The number you approve is the number on the invoice – no change orders unless you ask for something different mid-job. And the work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year, we fix it.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: tap tiles to find hollow spots, mark where water pools after a shower, and look for hairline cracks in the grout. That diagnostic work helps you know if this is a real problem or just cosmetic wear. What you should not DIY is pulling up a failed mortar bed in a Miami bathroom. Once you get below the tile, you’re dealing with a wet substrate, possibly mold, and a drain assembly that has to be set to exact height before the new bed goes in. Get the slope wrong and you’ve spent a weekend building a puddle. We redo plenty of homeowner attempts – it usually costs more than if we’d done it first. Call (850) 801-8046 and we’ll send someone to look at it for free. Good work doesn’t need a sales pitch; the estimate will tell you what’s actually wrong.
FAQs

A properly installed Sakrete mortar bed with a full waterproofing layer should last 20 to 30 years in Miami’s climate, even with daily use. What fails early isn’t the Sakrete itself – it’s poor slope, skipped waterproofing, or tile set before the mortar cured. If yours failed within a few years, installation was the problem, not the product. Call (850) 801-8046 and we’ll tell you exactly what happened.
No. Once the bed has cracked or the waterproofing layer under it has failed, patching won’t hold – water has already compromised the structure underneath. The fix is removing the tile and mortar down to the subfloor and rebuilding the pan correctly. We do this in Miami weekly, and a full pan rebuild usually takes 3 to 5 working days.
A shower pan rebuild takes 3 to 5 working days including cure time. A full bathroom remodel runs 2 to 3 weeks depending on whether we’re moving plumbing or replacing the subfloor. You’ll get a written timeline with the estimate, and under The Relay Visibility Guarantee you get live arrival times and photo updates before and after each phase.
Yes. We keep Sakrete Sand Mix, Floor Mud, and the cement-based waterproofing on our Miami trucks, along with matching drain assemblies and PVC liners. If your job needs something specific we don’t have, our supplier gets it to us same-day in most of Dade County.
