CertainTeed Bathroom Remodeling: The Miami Owner’s Guide

If you’re pricing a CertainTeed bathroom remodeling project in Miami, expect to spend between $10,620 and $33,040 for a full installation, including materials and labor. Most full bathroom remodels using CertainTeed backing boards, liners, and waterproofing systems take 2 to 4 weeks from demo to final grout, depending on scope and whether we’re moving plumbing. The most common way Miami homeowners find us is mid-failure: a shower pan cracked behind the tile, a CertainTeed backer board softened from years of Florida humidity, or a liner that started leaking into the drywall below. If you’re seeing water stains on the ceiling under an upstairs bath, or tile that’s started popping loose, that’s usually where it starts.

We’re Sawyer Remodel Miami, and we’ve been remodeling bathrooms across Miami since 2005. We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with CertainTeed, but we install and work around their product lines every week. If you’re holding a failed CertainTeed part or planning a full tear-out, this page covers what fails, what it costs, and how we handle the work.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed’s bathroom product line centers on their backer boards and shower wall systems, not finished fixtures. The two series we see most in Miami homes are the 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch CertainTeed backer board, along with their membrane waterproofing sheets. The gotcha for Miami owners: CertainTeed backer board is not the same as cement board. It’s a fiber-cement composite with a coated surface, and it requires specific alkaline-resistant mesh tape at the seams. If the previous installer used standard drywall tape, the seams start failing within a few years, especially in bathrooms with poor ventilation like you find in older Coral Gables or Little Havana homes where exhaust fans are undersized.

When we quote a repair, we don’t assume which CertainTeed product is behind your tile. We identify it by cutting a small access section or checking the exposed edge at the valve. The board thickness matters: 1/2-inch suits walls, 5/8-inch gets used for floors and tub decks. For shower niches and benches, CertainTeed specs a double layer with their waterproofing membrane. Aftermarket boards exist, but for a full shower rebuild in Miami, we recommend matching the original CertainTeed board. It’s what the tile was designed around, and substitutes often land a hair thinner, leaving a lip at the drywall transition.

Signs Your CertainTeed Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Tile cracking along grout lines at the shower pan. This usually means the CertainTeed board behind it has absorbed moisture and swelled. South Florida humidity makes this worse than drier climates, and once the board swells, the tile has nowhere to go but crack.
  • Musty smell that won’t leave, even after cleaning. Water is trapped behind the CertainTeed backer board or under the liner. No amount of bleach on the surface fixes what’s growing behind the wall.
  • Water stains on the ceiling below a second-floor bathroom. This is the classic Miami condo and two-story home tell. The CertainTeed pan or liner has let go, and you’re seeing the leak’s exit route, not its source.
  • Grout staining or efflorescence forming at the bottom corners. That white crust is minerals leaching from water moving through the board. The CertainTeed waterproofing layer has been compromised at the seam.
  • Tiles that sound hollow when tapped. The thinset has debonded from the CertainTeed board surface. Once that bond fails, your shower is leaking behind the tile, and the only real fix is a rebuild.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Project Scope Miami Price Range
Full bathroom remodel (CertainTeed board + waterproofing) $10,620 – $33,040
Small bathroom remodel (half bath or powder room) $5,900 – $14,160
Shower replacement (CertainTeed board, pan, tile) $3,540 – $10,030
Walk-in shower installation $5,310 – $14,160
Tub-to-shower conversion $4,130 – $11,800
Bathroom vanity installation $945 – $3,540

The range in Miami comes down to three things: square footage, whether we’re moving plumbing or keeping the existing rough-in, and tile selection. A 5×8 guest bath in Kendall with a standard layout sits at the lower end. A master bath in Brickell with a curbless shower, frameless glass, and a freestanding tub pushes toward $33,040. Every quote we write is a line-item breakdown: CertainTeed board and membrane, thinset, tile, labor, and disposal. You get the written price before we pick up a single tool, and the number on the invoice is the number you approved. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right, backed in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

CertainTeed backer board work is not inherently dangerous like a gas line or high-tension spring, so I won’t tell you to keep your hands off for safety’s sake. What I will tell you is that the waterproofing layer is where DIY jobs fail. The board itself cuts with standard carbide blades. The problem is the water management behind the tile: seam taping, corner waterproofing, proper fastener placement, and pan slope. If any one of those is off, you won’t know until the ceiling below the bathroom starts staining. Water behind tile is a slow, quiet failure.

What you can do safely is check your grout and caulk lines. If you see cracks at the pan or corners, reseal the caulk, but understand that’s a bandage. If the CertainTeed board behind it is compromised, no caulk fixes it. That’s when you call us at (850) 801-8046. We’ll diagnose it honestly, and if it’s a simple reseal, we’ll tell you that too. Good work doesn’t need a sales pitch.
