Schluter Kitchen Remodeling: The Miami Owner’s Guide
Schluter kitchen remodeling in Miami typically runs $16,520 to $53,100 for a full renovation using Schluter waterproofing and uncoupling systems, with smaller kitchens starting around $10,620. We stock Schluter KERDI-BOARD, DITRA-HEAT, and KERDI-BAND on our trucks and can usually start within a week of your written estimate. Most Miami homeowners call us when they see tile grout cracking at the countertop line, water staining under the sink base, or loose floor tile over a concrete slab – all signs the original waterproofing or uncoupling membrane wasn’t installed right, or was never there to begin with.
Here’s what you need to know before calling anyone: Schluter products work because they’re installed as a system. A membrane here and some KERDI-BAND there won’t save a kitchen if the seams aren’t lapped correctly or the mortar bed is wrong. We’ve pulled apart plenty of Miami kitchens where someone slapped DITRA over a cracked slab and called it done. The tile lasted six months. The slab kept moving underneath because nobody addressed the crack first. That’s the difference between buying Schluter parts and actually getting a Schluter system.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

We work with the full Schluter line for kitchen applications. That includes DITRA and DITRA-XL uncoupling membranes for floor tile over Miami’s concrete slabs, KERDI-BOARD for waterproof backer on walls and around sinks, KERDI waterproofing membrane for wet areas, DITRA-HEAT for electric floor warming, and the full profile line – Schiene, Rondec, Quadec, Dilex – for edge trim and movement joints. If your kitchen has tile, we can match the Schluter part to it.
The compatibility gotcha most Miami homeowners hit: DITRA-HEAT cable spacing. The heating cable must match the membrane stud spacing exactly – if you buy the wrong cable for the membrane on your floor, the whole heated floor system underperforms. We measure first, order second. We never guess.
On OEM versus aftermarket: for edge trim and profiles, quality aftermarket brands exist and can save 15 to 20 percent. But for waterproofing membranes and uncoupling systems, we only install genuine Schluter. The warranty matters, and so does the failure mode. A failed waterproofing seam behind a Miami sink cabinet means mold and a full tear-out. A slightly cheaper membrane isn’t worth that risk. We’ll put whatever brand you want in writing, but our recommendation for Schluter-specific parts is always OEM.

Signs Your Schluter Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Cracked grout lines running parallel to the floor tile edges. This almost always means the subfloor or slab is moving and there’s no uncoupling membrane absorbing that movement. In Miami, slab settlement and humidity swings make this worse than in drier climates.
- Hollow-sounding tile when you tap it with a screwdriver handle. The thinset has debonded from the substrate. With Schluter systems, this usually means the mortar was mixed too dry or skinned over before the tile went down.
- Water staining or soft cabinet bases around the sink and dishwasher. The waterproofing seam at the countertop line or the cabinet kick isn’t sealed. Once water gets behind tile, it travels. You won’t see the damage until the cabinet starts to sag.
- Loose or lifting edge trim at the tile-to-floor transition. The profile wasn’t set properly in the thinset, or the movement joint spacing was wrong for the tile run length. Schluter specs movement joints every 20 to 25 feet in tile floors, and Miami’s temperature swings make longer runs crack.
- Floor tile that feels warm in one spot when the DITRA-HEAT is off. This is a heating cable problem – either a damaged cable or a bad splice. It needs a continuity test, not a guess. We bring a megohmmeter and test before we tear anything open.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Miami kitchens, here’s the honest price picture:
- Full Schluter kitchen remodel: $16,520 to $53,100, depending on cabinet grade, countertop material, square footage, and how much waterproofing remediation the existing kitchen needs.
- Small kitchen remodel: $10,620 to $23,600, typically for galley kitchens or compact condo layouts like you see in Brickell and Edgewater.
- Backsplash replacement with Schluter KERDI behind it: $945 to $2,950, including tear-out, waterproofing, tile, and profile trim.
- Countertop replacement over Schluter-compatible substrate: $2,360 to $7,670, with Cambria, Silestone, or Caesarstone topping the range.
- Isolated floor repair with DITRA membrane: $1,800 to $4,500 depending on tile removal, slab prep, and whether we’re matching existing tile or replacing a section.
Every quote includes the written price before work starts, the Schluter parts line by line, labor, haul-off, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If we install it and something fails because of our work, we fix it. If the part itself fails, we’ll help you file the Schluter warranty claim and handle the labor. No change orders mid-job unless you change the scope, and if you do, you’ll approve the new number in writing before we swing a hammer.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the straight answer: you can safely check a few things yourself. Turn off the DITRA-HEAT thermostat and see if the tile cools evenly. Tap tiles for hollow sounds. Look under the sink with a flashlight for water staining on the cabinet base. Mark the grout cracks with painter’s tape and check back in a month to see if they’re growing.
But installing Schluter membrane, KERDI-BAND, or running DITRA-HEAT cable is not a weekend project. The mortar coverage has to be full, the seams have to be lapped the right direction, and the heating cable can’t be nicked or kinked. A bad splice or a pinhole in the membrane means a full tile tear-out later. That’s not a scare tactic – that’s what we’ve had to fix for Miami homeowners who tried to save money on the front end. If you want to know what’s involved before deciding, call us. Luca will tell you straight what’s worth your time and what isn’t. Good work doesn’t need a sales pitch.
FAQs

Schluter membranes are rated to last the life of the tile installation, and in Miami’s humidity that means 20 to 30 years when installed correctly. The failure point isn’t usually the membrane itself – it’s poor installation, improper mortar, or slab movement that wasn’t addressed before the membrane went down.
Sometimes, if the failure is isolated – a cracked tile along a single grout line or a loose edge profile can be repaired without tearing out the whole floor. But if the waterproofing seam has failed behind a sink line or the membrane is debonded over a cracked slab, you’re looking at partial or full removal to fix it right. Call (850) 801-8046 and we’ll tell you which situation you have before you spend a dollar.
A full kitchen remodel with Schluter systems typically runs four to eight weeks in Miami, depending on cabinet lead times and how much slab or subfloor remediation is needed. Isolated backsplash or floor membrane replacement can be done in two to four days. We’ll put the timeline in your written estimate so you’re not waiting on a guess.
We keep DITRA, DITRA-HEAT, KERDI-BAND, KERDI-BOARD, and common profile lengths on the truck. For specialty profiles, longer runs, or matching an existing color, we order from our Miami suppliers and have them in hand before the install date. We also stock and install KraftMaid and Wellborn cabinetry plus Cambria and Silestone countertops for the full kitchen scope, so you’re not coordinating parts from three different sources.
Call (850) 801-8046 for a free estimate. We’ll send someone who knows Schluter by part number, not by guess, and you’ll have a written price before any work starts.
